Today is our wedding anniversary. 24 years amazing and incredible years. Some would consider it quite the milestone in this day and time. I consider it a blessing and honor.
It was snowing and really cold on that Saturday 24 years ago. I remember shivering as we stood outside for some pictures as snow flakes came drifting down. And the hall for our reception, it was a walk in freezer. Apparently there was some miscommunication about when the reception was to take place and the heat didn't get turned on. I recall walking into the hall and seeing the majority of our guests wearing their coats awaiting the cake and "ice cream" reception.
Our wedding night plans began with a just the two of us going to dinner at the Carriage House restaurant. After the wedding we drove to Lori's parents home where we going to change out of our wedding garb and into some regular clothes, and then on to dinner. There were several family members at my in-laws house for a post-wedding get together. When we arrived I just assumed we'd go change clothes together and then be on our way. Not so much. With the house full of relatives and her parents, Lori wouldn't let me in the bedroom where she was changing and sent me to the bathroom to change my clothes. The rest of the evening was much better, and no, you don't get those details!
We went to Chicago yesterday for the day to celebrate. We have a favorite Asian restaurant there called "BIG BOWL" and had an awesome lunch there before doing what we've come best to do as a couple and that is shop. On the drive home we popped in a couple Christmas cd's settled in for the long haul ahead of us.
It wasn't long before the hustle and bustle of the day caught up with Lori and she dozed off. I looked over and saw her sleeping and was once again blown away as I am so often. How did I get so lucky to have someone so beautful, so loving and so caring in my life. I'm just in absolute awe of how God has blessed me.
December 11, 1982 seems like just yesterday. They say time flies when you're having fun and it must be true because the last 24 years have been the best years of my life. I'd rather spend time with her than anyone else. She is my best friend and always will be and I love her so very much.
I can only give you love that lasts forever,
And a promise to be near each time you call.
And the only heart I own
For you and you alone
That's all,
That's all...
I can only give you country walks in springtime
And a hand to hold when leaves begin to fall;
And a love whose burning light
Will warm the winter's night
That's all,
That's all.
There are those I am sure who have told you,
They would give you the world for a toy.
All I have are these arms to enfold you,
And a love time can never destroy.
If you're wondering what I'm asking in return, dear,
You'll be glad to know that my demands are small.
Say it's me that you'll adore,
For now and evermore
That's all,
That's all.
