Willow Creek's Leadership Summit (http://www.willowcreek.com/) kicked off today and I, once again had the privilege of being the producer for our satellite location at Granger Community Church (http://www.gccwired.com/).
In session II of the Summit, Bill Hybels interviewed Carly Fiorina, former CEO of Hewlett Packard (HP). Fortune named her “The Most Powerful Woman in Business” and she was recruited to be chief executive officer of Hewlett-Packard—the first female CEO of a Fortune 20 company—with a mandate to shake things up. And then her story really gets interesting. Carly Fiorina led HP through major internal changes, the worst technology slump in decades, and the most controversial merger in high-tech history. Yet just as things were about to turn around, she was abruptly fired, making front page news around the world.
This was a very compelling session and I was glued to the screen. Although there was a abundance of great leadership information that unfolded from this interview, Carly's differentiation between management and leadership stuck out the most for me. She said that management is about getting the job done within predefined constraints. This is what it takes, these are the steps....this is the predicted outcome. Leadership is facing the fear of failure and creating a vision of where you can go.
Where is the influence, the leadership potential I could have. short changed because I've opted for the prescribed management style? I going to take some time over the next few days to reflect and identify the fears that confine the potential opportunities and how they can be redirected into a vision blossoming with potential.
How incredible that tonite at our mid week service we had a guest speaker from National Community Church(http://theaterchurch.com/) in Washington, DC., Mark Batterson. He spoke on his book "In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day," a book on overcoming adversity and fear in your life. What a tie in with Carly Fiorina.
God is listening. God is speaking.
